How did rice get to the USA?
In the 17th century, a Dutch ship's captain gave the governor of South Carolina some of the rice seeds he was transporting as cargo, to thank him for repairs carried out to his ship. It is said that these few grains founded the American rice industry as we know it today. Together with rice from Vietnam, America's rice production occupies a leading position in the world market.
